The Broca Divide - Janet Scenes:

SCENE BEGINS IN THE...

INFIRMARY: CARTER is strapped to a gurney, writhing to escape. Several people are attempting to hold her down. We see DR. FRAISER for the first time, holding CARTER's legs down and giving instructions to her staff.

JANET:

Keep her from hurting herself until the sedatives take effect.

FRAISER walks away from the gurney, towards O'NEILL, who is observing off-screen.

O'NEILL:

This pretty much what Johnson has?

FRAISER:

Oh, I'd say so, and the other members of the team. This is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Come on, take a look.

FRAISER leads O'NEILL out of the infirmary and into the corridor, where several GUARDS and INFIRMARY STAFF are moving around.

FRAISER:

We converted DEFCON 1 living compartments from when this place was a missile silo, into isolation chambers. You never know what you're going to bring back through the Stargate.

They have reached a specific chamber, at which FRAISER slides back the viewing panel in the door to show O'NEILL the occupant - JOHNSON, in the same primitive state as 'The Touched'.

FRAISER:

Notice the swelling of the brow ridge? Some are even developing new follicle growth.

O'NEILL:

Any idea what's causing it?

FRAISER:

I wish I knew. I've got calls in to every specialist in the service, but I've got one hand tied behind my back because of the need-to-know classification of the Stargate Project.

FRAISER shuts the viewing panel and they move along the corridor.

FRAISER:

And it's spreading. We got two more in an hour later.

O'NEILL opens the panel on the next isolation chamber to reveal an AIRMAN beating his fists violently against the wall, blood smeared down it in streaks.

FRAISER:

I've never seen a behavioural disorder like this. All the victims are acting like animals.

The AIRMAN tips over the metal bunks in his isolation chamber, and climbs on top of them as O'NEILL and FRAISER watch.

O'NEILL:

And you think Carter has the same thing?

FRAISER:

Mmhmm. Her behaviour fits.

O'NEILL and FRAISER move back along the corridor the way they came.

FRAISER:

All the victims are behaving like primitives; most female low-level primates tend to choose their sexual partners according to who would give them the strongest offspring. The leaders of a pack or a tribe are usually the prime choice. You should be flattered.

O'NEILL:

Yeah, I'm honoured.

END OF SCENE.

SCENE BEGINS IN THE...

INFIRMARY: We see somebody sitting on a bed, having blood drawn from their arm. FRAISER walks in with HAMMOND. As the camera pans up we see it is DANIEL JACKSON who is having blood drawn.

FRAISER:

We've managed to isolate an organism in the victim's bloodstreams.

HAMMOND:

Organism? Like a parasite or something?

FRAISER:

More like a - uh, parasitical virus. And from what I can tell it seems to feed on amines and cholines - chemical transmitters in the body, that includes neurotransmitters. As they're depleted, all but the most primitive parts of the brain seem to just shut down.

HAMMOND:

Is that why they act like animals?

FRAISER:

Actually, the organism seems to release a hormone that stimulates the primitive regions of the brain that are normally dormant. I have never seen anything like this on Earth.

JACKSON:

Exactly. On Earth. That would explain 'The Touched'.

JACKSON gets off the infirmary bed and walks away. HAMMOND looks after him questioningly.

HAMMOND:

Beg your pardon?

TEAL'C:

That's what the primitives were called on P3X 797. The Touched.

JACKSON looks over at CARTER strapped to a bed on the other side of the room as he speaks.

JACKSON:

But I think, given recent events, it's safe to say they aren't born primitive. They must have this very contagious disease. And we came in contact with them, isn't that special?

FRAISER:

So the question is: why haven't you and Mr. Teal'c come down with the symptoms?

JACKSON:

Um, Mr. Teal'c... Teal'c's symbiote probably protects him.

TEAL'C:

That would be likely.

FRAISER:

Well, what about you, Dr. Jackson?

JACKSON:

Well, that beats me. You're the doctor, Doctor. Ah, maybe I have a natural immunity.

TEAL'C:

Perhaps you will develop symptoms later.

JACKSON:

Thank you, for the moral support.

FRAISER:

I am checking both of your blood for the presence of the organism, and I would bet that you both have it.

FRAISER turns to HAMMOND, who has been listening to the exchange.

FRAISER:

This appears to be highly contagious.

HAMMOND:

Are you saying we could have brought a new plague to this planet?

FRAISER:

Yes, Sir, that's exactly what I'm saying.

HAMMOND:

Well, that's it. I'm ordering this mountain sealed off. No one comes in or goes out until we get a handle on this thing.

HAMMOND leaves the infirmary, and the shot pans around to JACKSON and TEAL'C, until a screeching sound is heard from outside the room, the red emergency lights begin to flash, and JACKSON, TEAL'C and FRAISER leave at a run. They move down the corridor until they reach an isolation chamber marked IS-19. JACKSON pulls back the viewing panel to reveal O'NEILL, now in the primitive state, and extremely agitated.

TEAL'C:

He is going to damage himself.

FRAISER:

I've been pumping him with sedatives to control him but they wear off fast. Help me give him some more. Let's go - go!

They open the door and all three head inside, accompanied by an unidentified AIRMAN. O'NEILL tries to escape but is restrained. FRAISER shouts something undecipherable above O'NEILL's screams. FRAISER injects him with sedative, and he slumps into unconsciousness. TEAL'C lays him on the floor as the...

INFIRMARY: AIRMEN and NURSES are moving patients around on gurneys, or by hand. We see CARTER wheeled out of the room, clearly injured, as HAMMOND enters and meets FRAISER, who is carrying a stack of papers and a clipboard, and looking more upbeat than we have seen her thus far.

FRAISER:

Good news, General!

HAMMOND:

I could use some of that about now, what is it?

FRAISER and HAMMOND walk to where TEAL'C and JACKSON are standing. FRAISER gestures to them as she speaks.

FRAISER:

These two gentlemen don't appear to have the organism in their system. Now, if we can just isolate why they have been able to resist it...

TEAL'C:

Perhaps we should ask The Untouched how they avoid contracting the disease.

JACKSON:

Maybe they know something we don't.

FRAISER:

I could use a blood sample from one of the uninfected. Maybe they have something in their systems to protect them - something we could synthesize.

HAMMOND turns and walks away a few paces, before turning back looking thoughtful. He seems to get an idea, and gestures to JACKSON and TEAL'C.

HAMMOND:

Alright, either of you know how to draw blood?

JACKSON and TEAL'C don't answer, but look blank. The answer is clearly 'no'.

HAMMOND:

Doctor, teach them. You go through in half an hour, gear up.

JACKSON:

Wa-wait, just the two of us?

HAMMOND is walking away, but turns back to answer.

HAMMOND:

You're immune! I don't know anyone else who is.

HAMMOND leaves the room and the camera returns to JACKSON and TEAL'C as the...

SCENE BEGINS IN THE…

HOLDING CELL: We open on O'NEILL, looking dazed but awake, leaning against the back wall. An SF looks through the opening, and then opens the door. HAMMOND is led in wearing a straight-jacket.

FRAISER
Sorry, Colonel O'Neill, but your private room just became semi-private.

HAMMOND is lowered onto the bottom bunk.

FRAISER cont.
We're running out of places to put all the victims. We've used the brigs, we've used the temp quarters, some of the storage rooms…

FRAISER lets out her breath in a long sigh and rubs her forehead. She's about to leave the room when O'NEILL speaks. His voice is croaking and barely intelligible at times.

O'NEILL
Doc… Doc.

FRAISER
Did you say something?

O'NEILL looks at FRAISER for a moment before gesturing towards his arm.

O'NEILL
Give more.

FRAISER
What? Give more what?

O'NEILL continues to gesture with his head and hold out his arm towards FRAISER, who has now come to kneel in front of him.

FRAISER
An injection? You mean you want more sedative?

O'NEILL nods.

FRAISER cont.
You've already had more than the maximum safe dosage, twice as much as anyone else because you've been more violent.

O'NEILL
Give.

FRAISER
No. It's not safe.

FRAISER turns to leave again, and walks towards the door. O'NEILL becomes angry and shouts.

O'NEILL
Give! [beat, them more quietly] Give…

FRAISER
Why are you so insistent?

O'NEILL continues to look beseechingly at FRAISER and hold out his arm. FRAISER gives in and turns to the nurse behind her for a syringe of sedative. She moves back to O'NEILL, kneels in front of him and rolls up his sleeve to administer the injection. As it takes effect his heads droops and he appears to lose consciousness.

FRAISER
Must've been in a lot of pain.

FRAISER rises once again to leave, and is almost at the door when O'NEILL lets out an unintelligible grunt. FRAISER turns back towards him.

FRAISER
Colonel O'Neill?

FRAISER moves back towards O'NEILL who is opening and closing is mouth as though trying to form words but failing. He makes several indistinguishable sounds before managing a real word. This happens before each thing he manages to say for the remainder of the scene.

O'NEILL
Me.

FRAISER looks amazed and then begins to smile.

FRAISER
So you are still in there somewhere.

O'NEILL
Dr-dream?

FRAISER [shakes her head]
I'm afraid not, Colonel. It's very real. This is interesting. Enough sedative must knock back the primitive mind. Colonel, listen to me. I am not going to be able to keep you at this level very long, it is too dangerous. It could cause permanent brain damage.

O'NEILL
Wh-what? What is it?

FRAISER
It's a parasitic virus. All that we can tell is that it seems to mess with body chemicals – all of them. Testosterone levels skyrocket, that's the aggressive behaviour. It's a histaminolytic, which means that it breaks down histamine. We-

O'NEILL
Experiment. On me.

FRAISER
Experiment on you? No sir, I can't do that.

O'NEILL reaches out and takes FRAISER's face gently in his hand. She looks distressed.

O'NEILL
Use me.

FRAISER covers O'NEILL's hand on her face and squeezes it. We see a close-up of O'NEILL's face as the…

INFIRMARY: FRAISER and a NURSE stand over a gurney on which CARTER lies. They are tending to an injury to her stomach. TEAL'C enters the room and FRAISER comes over to him.

FRAISER
Thank God you're back.

TEAL'C
What happened to Captain Carter?

FRAISER
She was stabbed by her roommate. Don't worry, it's superficial, she's going to be okay.

FRAISER leads TEAL'C out of the INFIRMARY and into the CORRIDOR.

FRAISER
We've run out of space! We've had to start doubling up on the iso-rooms.

TEAL'C
I have retrieved the blood sample you requested.

FRAISER
Good work, Mr. Teal'c.

TEAL'C hands FRAISER a vial of blood as the…

O'NEILL'S HOLDING CELL: FRAISER burst into the room, where TEAL'C and O'NEILL are sitting side-by-side on the lower bunk. Throughout the scene FRAISER is clearly excited and optimistic.

FRAISER
Colonel O'Neill, I think I might have something.

FRAISER drags a chair over to sit down in front of O'NEILL and TEAL'C.

FRAISER cont.
I was examining the blood sample that Mr. Teal'c brought me, then it hit me: there was very little histamine in it.

O'NEILL cocks his head to the side slightly, in a gesture of non-comprehension.

FRAISER
If the people on that planet are human as you say, they have to have histamine in their blood.

TEAL'C
How does this help us?

FRAISER
Well, as I said before, this microbe is a histaminolytic – it feeds on histamine. The Untouched have no histamine in their bodies so the organism couldn't survive in them.

TEAL'C
I do not understand. It is The Untouched that become The Touched. If they have none of the substance of which you speak, why then do some of them change?

FRAISER
Because only some of them have this low histamine level. Which means there is probably a naturally occurring antihistamine in their diet. The ones that don't eat it eventually contract the organism. Which is what gave me an idea. I checked the files – both Dr. Jackson and myself have acute rhinitis caused by severe allergies.

TEAL'C and O'NEILL share a look.

TEAL'C
Explain.

FRAISER
I take strong antihistamines every day. So did Dr. Jackson. I have no histamine for the microbe to feed on. Just like The Untouched, the organism starves in my body.

TEAL'C
Does this mean you have a cure?

FRAISER removes a syringe from her pocket as she speaks.

FRAISER
We have to try mega doses of chlorpheniramine maleate on someone and see if it works.

O'NEILL
Me.

FRAISER
I thought you might say that. Now, the dose required to completely clear the body of histamine for a long enough time could be harmful. You're sure?

O'NEILL nods and FRAISER moves over to his IV, where she injects the contents of the syringe. O'NEILL looks sleepy as the drugs take effect.

FRAISER
Now all we can do is wait? We'd better lock him up again.

TEAL'C helps O'NEILL to lie down and then covers him with a blanket before leaving the room. We see O'NEILL fall unconscious before the…

THE GATEROOM: MAKEPEACE and a member of his team are checking their guns. The shot moves over to SG-1, minus JACKSON. FRAISER is briefing them on their mission, while an SF hands out guns.

FRAISER
The guns are loaded with tranquilizer darts filled with chlorpheniramine. Now, a direct hit on a Touched man or woman should knock them out long enough in order to starve the disease.

CHEVRON GUY [on loudspeaker]
Chevron five encoded.

FRAISER
Good luck.

O'NEILL
Thanks, Doc.

FRAISER leaves.
